Tom Owen joined Buzzacott in September 2024 as a Senior Manager in our VAT Consultancy team.
With a diverse portfolio of clients, Tom has worked with international inbound businesses, not-for-profit organisations, SMEs, OMBs, FTSE250 companies, high-net-worth individuals, intermediaries, and property developers.
Throughout his career, Tom has supported clients facing various challenges, including the introduction of new products, property acquisition or development, restructuring, international supply chain issues, and navigating HMRC enquiries or process reviews. He and his team conduct thorough VAT reviews, identifying risks and opportunities within clients' VAT accounting processes.
Tom appreciates the growing complexity of VAT, and helps his clients carefully navigate the rules and how to put things right in the most appropriate and efficient manner. He and his team assist charities and not-for-profit organisations in maximising VAT savings, particularly on new building projects.
Tom has extensive experience in property and construction, e-commerce, and partial exemption. With a background in economics and a secondment as a government VAT economist, he brings strong data analytics skills to his role. He also collaborates closely with Buzzacott's Corporate Tax and Charity Tax teams to provide comprehensive advice that enhances clients' overall tax positions, offering a holistic approach to VAT consultancy.
Prior to joining Buzzacott, Tom began his VAT career as a VAT officer for HM Customs and Excise, specialising in VAT assurance and fraud investigations. He then worked as a VAT economist for the Treasury before gaining experience at several private firms, including Big Four and mid-tier firms. Tom also spent time as an in-house VAT manager for Royal Mail.
Outside of work, Tom enjoys music (performing, producing, and collecting), reading, photography, learning languages, and spending time with his family.
